TEF
The Test d’Evaluation de Français (TEF) is a test of fluency in French for non-native speakers. It’s administered by the Paris Chamber of Commerce (Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie de Paris, CCIP). It’s recognized by the French Ministry of Education and is often used for the purposes of economic immigration, particularly for those immigrating to French-speaking areas like Quebec, or for the Federal Skilled Worker Program in Canada.
The TEF consists of five modules: reading (compréhension écrite), listening (compréhension orale), writing (expression écrite), speaking (expression orale), and vocabulary and structure (lexique et structure). Note that for immigration to Canada purposes only first 4 modules are required and last one, vocabulary and structure is not required.
- Compréhension écrite (Reading): This module assesses the candidate’s ability to understand written French through the use of multiple-choice questions. It lasts 60 minutes and includes 50 questions. The maximum score is 300.
- Compréhension orale (Listening): This module assesses the candidate’s ability to understand spoken French through the use of multiple-choice questions based on recorded materials. It lasts 40 minutes and includes 60 questions. The maximum score is 360.
- Expression écrite (Writing): This module assesses the candidate’s ability to express themselves in written French. It lasts 60 minutes and includes 2 sections. The maximum score is 450.
- Expression orale (Speaking): This module assesses the candidate’s ability to express themselves in spoken French. It lasts 35 minutes and includes 2 sections. The maximum score is 450.
The total duration of the test is approximately 3 hours 15 minutes, excluding breaks.
The results of the TEF are usually available within 4 weeks of the test date. Each module is scored separately, and the scores are combined to provide an overall assessment of the candidate’s French language proficiency. The scores are valid for two years.
Please note that the specific score requirements may vary depending on the immigration program or educational institution to which you are applying. It’s recommended to check with the specific program or institution for their requirements.
