Photograph Specifications for Permanent Residence Application

The photo requirements for Permanent Residence to Canada are quite specific. Here are the guidelines:

  1. Size: The frame size of the photo should be 50mm x 70mm. The length of the face on the photo from chin to crown of head (natural top of head) must be between 31mm and 36mm.
  2. Quality: The photos must be clear, well-defined and taken against a plain white or light-coloured background without shadows. The photos must be printed on quality photographic paper.
  3. Head Position & Expression: The subject must directly face the camera. The head must be centered in the photo. Neutral facial expression is preferred. Both eyes must be open and clearly visible. The mouth must be closed.
  4. Appearance: The photos must show the subject’s full head without any head covering, unless it is worn for religious beliefs or medical reasons. However, the head covering must not cast any shadows on the face. Glasses are not allowed. The photos must reflect/represent natural skin tones.
  5. Date: The photos must be recent, taken within the last twelve months to reflect the subject’s current appearance.
  6. Quantity: Two identical photos must be provided. They must be original and not altered in any way or taken from an existing photo.
  7. Photographer: The photos must be taken by a commercial photographer.
  8. Back of the Photo: The name and date of birth of the person appearing in the photo, as well as the date the photo was taken, must be written on the back of one photo by the photographer. The photographer may also stamp this information on the back of the photo.
  9. Photograph: The photograph must be original and unaltered. The photo must not be altered in any way.
